With the innovative foodproof® Listeria genus and foodproof® Listeria monocytogenes detection kits, Merck offers various real-time PCR kits for the specific detection of all Listeria species in food, covering all six known species of the Listeria genus including Listeria monocytogenes. L. monocytogenes deserves special mention as a human and animal pathogen. With foodproof® Listeria genus and foodproof® Listeria monocytogenes detection kits, both based on real-time PCR technology, clear and precise results are available within 24 hours. This enables food analysis labs and food plants to release their foods much faster than the traditional culture media-based methods that take up to 6 days.

For high convenience and easy handling, the foodproof® Listeria detection kits do not require skills in molecular biology and minimize the risk of cross-contamination. The quick and easy-to-use foodproof® ShortPrep II kit allows for quick and efficient DNA extraction from Listeria after a short one-day enrichment step – for most foods – and is therefore the perfect match for foodproof® Listeria genus and foodproof® Listeria monocytogenes detection kits.
To ensure maximum reliability, the foodproof® Listeria genus and foodproof® Listeria monocytogenes test kits have been developed in full accordance with the latest ISO requirements for real-time PCR.

About Listeria

The presence of Listeria is an indicator for critical hygienic conditions in the production process. Therefore, the foodproof® Listeria genus detection kits can be used to test for all Listeria species. Among the six known Listeria species, Listeria monocytogenes deserves special mention as a human and animal pathogen. Listeria monocytogenes is one of the most widely distributed foodborne pathogens in the world and causes severe infections in immunocompromized persons. Listeria infections can result in mild gastroenteritis or in sepsis, meningitis, encephalitis, and abortion. Since Listeria monocytogenes bacteria are capable of crossing the placental barrier, infection of a pregnant mother with Listeria constitutes a special risk for the fetus or leads to infection of the newborn child. Listeria is one of the main sources of infections also due to its capability of growing at refrigerator temperatures of +2°C.
